Healing Timeline

What to expect at each stage of the tattoo healing process.

Days 1–3: Oozing & Tenderness

Your tattoo is an open wound. Expect redness, swelling, and plasma oozing. Remove the wrap after 2–4 hours (or as your artist instructs). Wash gently with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never a cloth towel.

Days 4–7: Tightness & Flaking

The skin tightens and may feel like a sunburn. Light flaking begins — this is normal. Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer 2–3 times daily. The tattoo may look dull or cloudy. Do not pick at any flakes.

Days 8–14: Peeling & Itching

The main peeling phase. Large flakes of colored skin come off — this is ink-stained dead skin, not your tattoo fading. Itching can be intense. Tap or slap the area gently instead of scratching. Continue moisturizing.

Days 15–30: Settling In

Surface healing is complete but the deeper skin layers are still recovering. The tattoo may look slightly milky or hazy — this clears as the final skin layer regenerates. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and submerging in water for the full 30 days.

What to use — and what to avoid — during the healing process.

Gentle Cleanser

Use a fragrance-free, dye-free liquid soap. Dial Gold, Dr. Bronner's Baby Unscented, or CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser are popular choices. Avoid bar soap — it harbors bacteria.

Moisturizer

A thin layer of unscented lotion after each wash. Lubriderm Daily Moisture (fragrance-free), Eucerin Original, or Hustle Butter are artist-recommended. Less is more — don't suffocate the tattoo.

Saniderm / Second Skin

Medical-grade adhesive bandage that creates a sealed healing environment. Many artists now apply this immediately. Leave on for 3–5 days. Plasma buildup underneath is normal — don't panic.

SPF 50+ Sunscreen

After full healing (4+ weeks), always apply broad-spectrum SPF 50+ over your tattoo before sun exposure. UV is the number one cause of tattoo fading. This is a lifetime commitment.

Fragrance-Free Laundry Detergent

Switch your sheets and worn clothing to fragrance-free detergent during healing. Fragrances and dyes can irritate the open wound. Tide Free & Gentle or All Free Clear work well.

What to Avoid

No Neosporin (causes allergic reactions in many people), no petroleum jelly (clogs pores), no alcohol-based products, no scented lotions. If your artist gives specific product advice, follow theirs first.

Do's and Don'ts

Follow these rules for the best possible heal.

DO: Wash 2–3x Daily

Clean your tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap every morning, evening, and after sweating. Always use clean hands — never a washcloth or sponge.

DO: Moisturize Lightly

Apply a thin, translucent layer of moisturizer after each wash. Your skin should feel hydrated, not greasy. Over-moisturizing traps bacteria and causes breakouts.

DO: Wear Loose Clothing

Tight clothing sticks to fresh tattoos and pulls ink out when removed. Wear loose, breathable fabrics over the tattooed area for the first 2 weeks.

DON'T: Submerge in Water

No swimming pools, hot tubs, baths, lakes, or oceans for at least 4 weeks. Submerging introduces bacteria and softens scabs, pulling out ink. Quick showers only.

DON'T: Pick or Scratch

Picking scabs or peeling skin pulls ink out and causes patchy healing. If it itches, slap the area lightly or apply moisturizer. The peeling will stop on its own.

DON'T: Expose to Sun

Direct sunlight on a healing tattoo causes blistering, fading, and damage. Keep it covered or stay out of the sun entirely for 4 weeks. After healing, always use SPF 50+.
